The Masraj Mekhela Chadar is a traditional two-piece attire worn by women in Assam, India. The Mekhela, a cylindrical skirt, drapes from the waist down, typically with a few pleats tucked in at the right side. The Chador, the upper part, is a long fabric draped around the upper body and tucked into the Mekhela, similar to a saree pallu. It is crafted from Masraj (Mashru) silk, a hand-woven blend of silk and cotton known for its smooth, shiny silk surface and breathable cotton underside. These garments are renowned for their intricate, hand-woven ornamental designs featuring floral, animal, or geometrical motifs, reflecting Assamese culture and nature. Masraj Mekhela Chadors are worn for various occasions, from daily wear to formal events, symbolizing the rich cultural heritage and skilled weaving traditions of Assam and Gujarats Kutch region, where Mashru silk originates.
